In the metal welding operations gas acts as a protection against unwanted surface contamination and oxidation of the weld. The article describes the advantages of using argon as a shielding gas, capable of providing high-controlled dynamic parameters of the CO2 and solid-state lasers welding process.

Electron-Beam-Pumped Semiconductor Laser Emitters in Glideslope Aircraft Landing System
Requirements to the modern navigation equipment of aircraft landing systems are very severe: equipment must be reliable, it has to efficiently make provision for the aircraft landing approach at any time of day or night including severe weather conditions and, what is not insignificant, not impair the pilots’ health. Developers of a new laser three-color navigation system managed to combine all these advantages thanrs to the usage of a new generation of electron-pumped semiconductor lasers – laser cathode-ray tubes (CRT).

At present time glasses and crystals remain the basic materials of solid-state lasers. However, from the middle of the last century in many worldwide laboratories make attempts to bring up to optical materials the so-called optical ceramics. Part II of the review continues to publicize the history of theoretical and experimental investigations of fundamental absorption, transfer, conversion and emission of input energy processes. Supercontinuum White Light Lasers. Broadband Supercontinuum Lasers for Bio-Imaging
Supercontinuum white light laser, like the NKT Photonics’ SuperK EXTREME, combines the broadband radiation with the power and robustness of a fiber laser. One can access any wavelength in the 400 to 2400 nm range enabling optimal dye excitation. Also fluorescence lifetimes are easily measured with the short pulses from the lasers. Today supercontinuum lasers are used for numerous bio-imaging applications including OCT, confocal microscopy, FLIM, FRET and optical molecular imaging.

Single photon counting modules based on avalanche photodiodes

Single photon counting method is indispensable when you want to register such extremely weak light signals that traditional photodetectors can’t distinguish the desired signal from the noise. Future technologies for creating devices for detection of single photons shall combine the advantages of low-cost CMOS technology with efficient and low noise single photon avalanche photodiode (SPAD) detectors.
